Seaplane vs speedboat: how you reach your island

In the Maldives, your transfer is not a detail — it shapes your budget, your arrival time and even which resorts are on the table.

Every Maldives resort sits on its own island, so after you land at Velana International Airport (Malé) you still have one more journey to make. There are three ways to do it, and the right one depends on how far your resort is.

Speedboat

Used by resorts within roughly 20–45 minutes of the airport. Speedboats are the most flexible option: they run day and night, so a late international arrival is no problem, and they are usually the cheapest transfer. If you want to minimise transfer time, hassle and cost, choose a resort in North or South Malé Atoll.

Seaplane

Used by resorts too far for a boat — typically 30–50 minutes by air. The seaplane is an experience in itself: a low-altitude flight over turquoise atolls that many travellers rank among the highlights of the trip. Two things to plan for, though:

Domestic flight + speedboat

For the far southern and northern atolls, you fly on a small domestic plane to a regional airport, then take a short speedboat to the resort. This combination reaches remote, less-crowded atolls (like Laamu or Addu) and can be more comfortable than a long seaplane hop.

Budget tip: Always add the transfer cost to the nightly rate when comparing resorts. A cheaper villa two atolls away can end up costing more than a pricier one near Malé once the seaplane is included. Each resort card on our site shows its transfer type so you can factor it in.
