Every Maldives resort sits on its own island, so after you land at Velana International Airport (Malé) you still have one more journey to make. There are three ways to do it, and the right one depends on how far your resort is.
Speedboat
Used by resorts within roughly 20–45 minutes of the airport. Speedboats are the most flexible option: they run day and night, so a late international arrival is no problem, and they are usually the cheapest transfer. If you want to minimise transfer time, hassle and cost, choose a resort in North or South Malé Atoll.
Seaplane
Used by resorts too far for a boat — typically 30–50 minutes by air. The seaplane is an experience in itself: a low-altitude flight over turquoise atolls that many travellers rank among the highlights of the trip. Two things to plan for, though:
- Daylight only. Seaplanes do not fly after dark. If your flight lands in the evening, you may need an overnight in Malé and a transfer the next morning — check this before you book flights.
- Cost. Seaplane transfers are the most expensive, often several hundred US dollars per person return, and are usually paid to the resort separately from your room rate.
Domestic flight + speedboat
For the far southern and northern atolls, you fly on a small domestic plane to a regional airport, then take a short speedboat to the resort. This combination reaches remote, less-crowded atolls (like Laamu or Addu) and can be more comfortable than a long seaplane hop.

The budget secret: MTCC public ferries (guesthouse islands)
Heading to a local guesthouse island rather than a resort? You don't need an expensive private transfer. The government ferry network — run by MTCC and branded RTL (Raajje Transport Link) — connects inhabited islands for a tiny fraction of the cost. It's the cheapest way to travel in the Maldives by far, and how locals get around.

- Official schedules: MTCC publishes route timetables at mtcc.mv; book Greater-Malé-region routes on the RTL app or rtl.mtcc.mv (currently zones 1, 2, 5 & 6). Some routes are ticket-at-the-terminal only.
- No ferries on Fridays (local holiday) on most routes — plan arrival/departure days around this.
- From the airport to a local island: take the ~MVR 15 Hulhule ferry to Malé first, then the island ferry from the Malé terminal (near Maagiri Hotel). Arrive 30–45 min early; seating is first-come.
- Late flight? Ferries and speedboats stop by evening — you may need a night in Malé/Hulhumalé and travel next morning.
- Your guesthouse will confirm the exact current ferry time and fare — always check a day ahead.

The taxes first-timers forget
Maldives resort quotes are often shown before tax. Three mandatory charges get added — knowing them up front stops the check-out surprise:
