The overwater villa — a bungalow on stilts above a turquoise lagoon — is the image that sells the Maldives. But a beach villa can be the smarter choice depending on who you are travelling with and what you value. Here is how to decide.

The overwater villa

Best for: honeymooners, couples and anyone chasing that iconic direct-lagoon-access experience. You step from your deck straight into the sea, often over your own patch of reef.

• Unbeatable views and privacy over the water.
• Frequently the priciest category at a resort.
• Less ideal for young children (deep water off the deck) and can be hot at midday with less shade.

The beach villa

Best for: families, longer stays and travellers who want space, shade and easy access to the island's restaurants and pools.

• Direct access to sand and often a private garden.
• Usually more affordable than overwater — sometimes dramatically so.
• Safer and more practical with children; cooler under palm shade.

The money question

At many resorts, the overwater category costs 30–60% more per night than a comparable beach villa. A popular strategy is to split your stay: a few nights in a beach villa, then a couple of nights overwater for the finale — the experience without the full premium. Some couples do the reverse to end on the beach.
